The Department of Chemical Production Machines and Apparatus was created in 1928 at the Chemical and Technological Faculty of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, under the leadership of Professor V.Yu. Vasiliev, and ten years later it was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Chemical Engineering (since 1999, the Faculty of Engineering and Chemistry ). The department received its modern name in 1997 – the Department of Machines and Apparatus of Chemical and Oil Refining Industries (MAHNV).

The scientific school “Processes and Apparatus” was created, which was one of the top three scientific schools in Eastern Europe. From 1973 to 1999, the head of the department was “Honored Professor of KPI” Yury Yukhimovych Lukach. Under his leadership, a new direction of the scientific school of process research and the creation of polymer materials processing equipment was successfully developed.

Yaroslav Kornienko

Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Public Education of Ukraine,
scientific head of the department

From 1999 to 2021, Ya.M. Kornienko worked as the head of the department. A graduate of the department in 1972, Kornienko Yaroslav Mykytovych, doctor of technical sciences, professor, and honored worker of public education of Ukraine, continued the development of the scientific school “Processes of heat and mass transfer in technological equipment of industrial production” as its head. Under his leadership, the scientific and engineering center “Chemical Engineering” was created, in which a new direction of research into heat and mass exchange processes in dispersed systems was developed. Based on the results of the work, an innovative one-stage technology for obtaining complex humic-organic-mineral fertilizers with a variable ratio of nutrients and stimulating substances was created for ecologically safe agriculture.

From September 2021 to the present, the department is headed by a graduate of the department, long-time deputy head of the department Andriy Stepaniuk.

To meet the requirements of employers, a new educational program “Computer-integrated Technologies for Designing Chemical Engineering Equipment” was introduced in 2020, and in 2021, training for the master’s degree program “Engineering and Computer-integrated Technologies for Designing Innovative Industrial Equipment” began in 2021.

Andriy Stepaniuk

Ph.D., associate professor,
Head of Department

In recent years, the recognition of great methodical work was expressed in the appointment of guarantors in the specialty 133 Industrial mechanical engineering of the educational level:

  • bachelor, educational program “Computer-integrated technologies of chemical engineering equipment design” – associate professor O. O. Seminskyi;
  • master of professional direction, educational program “Engineering and computer-integrated technologies of designing innovative industrial equipment” – associate professor A.R. Stepaniuk;
  • PhD, “Industrial Mechanical Engineering” educational program – Professor Y.M. Kornienko, who is simultaneously appointed as the head of NMCU in this specialty. In September 2022, under his leadership, the educational program was successfully accredited and a 5-year accreditation certificate was obtained.
